I know what are you saying because that is exactly how I started too!

But, my good friend Pete (fabricator and boat builder/repair/restoration) got me on track with the DA sanders. On the G-3, I had to crawl way under that front deck and there was alot of dust etc. At Petes' recommendation, I got a "Tyvek" Suit from our boat shop along with a good respirator and some "Oakley" MX Goggles and things went pretty after that!

Using the coarse paper at first to get off the heavy stuff and then going to a finer sanding disc worked real well.
